CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Adrienne had tried to get Gavin to tell her where he was taking her, but the wolf was as stubborn as she was. That was saying something. She figured she might have met her match with that one.

She stared at his profile as he drove. “It’s a nice day today.”

“It is.” He glanced at her and smirked. “You plan on changing that?”

“Maybe.” She wasn’t sure she could change the weather. In theory, she could.

Noticing that he was slowing, she glanced out the front window and scanned the area. Straight ahead was a large box-shaped building almost as big as the whole Wintervale village. “Where are we?”

Gavin parked the transporter around the side of the building. When he shut off the engine, he turned to her and grinned. “Jericho and I used to get into so much trouble with what’s inside.”

She studied him suspiciously. “Are we going to do something that will have us locked up?”

“No.” He chuckled. “But we’re going to have fun. That is, if I can get one of them running.”

Okay, he had her attention and got her curiosity running wild. “Well, let’s go see what’s inside.”

He got out and was at her door before she could open it. Damn shifter speed.

He opened the massive doors, and she walked into the building. Three spaceships sat inside. Turning to Gavin, she asked, “Are we going into space?”

Shaking his head, he pressed his palm on a control panel, and the place illuminated with soft light. “No. These are surface flyers.”

“Like airplanes on Earth?” Adrienne moved closer to the flyers. Two of them were triangle-shaped with a boxy back end. The other was more bubble-shaped, almost like the classic version of spaceships people on Earth blasted to the media and in books.

Gavin went to the first one and opened it. “These are old, so the tech isn’t updated.” He disappeared inside and came back a few seconds later. “And this one is missing a converter.”

She had no idea what that was, but she trusted he did. Following him to the next one, she peeked inside the craft as he entered. “Do you think one of these will run?”

“I’m hoping. Jer said he hadn’t been here in years. Since before the war. He was surprised I found it on the satellite scans.” Gavin poked his head in the door. “Come on in.”

Excitement sparked inside her as she walked up the ramp and into the flyer. It wasn’t a wide-open space. There were two seats at the helm and another behind what she thought was the captain’s chair.

She sat in the copilot chair while Gavin crawled into the engine compartment. “What kind of trouble did you and Jericho get into with the flyers?”

He chuckled. “The three that are in this hangar are what's left of our fleet. The war wiped them out. Actually, Cedric destroyed them because he was a paranoid bastard. I wasn’t sure what shape these three would be in.” He stuck his head out of the compartment. “Jer and I used to steal a ship every month.
